Our achievements so far
|
First Phase of National Research Programme: We completed a massive Scottish Arts Council Lottery funded pioneering rsearch and participation project which took place over 3 years in the Scottish Borders and Angus regions entitled "dance! Dance!! DANCE!!!". This resulted in the collation of a huge amount of archive material and oral history; produced Education Packs for use in schools and initiated classes, events and research groups throughout the life of the project and beyond. Core: We have an ongoing programme of events, classes, performances and demonstrations which take place throughout the year. We have partnerships and collaborations with both traditional and contemporary arts organisations and actively seek to develop relationships with as many interested individuals and organisations as possible, including performers and artists. The organisation continues to act as a platform for the exchange of information, news, events and opinions. STDT acts as an umbrella organisation for all the various types of Scottish traditional dance and seeks to promote the diversity of styles whenever possible. Traditional Dance Festival: Our 4th Traditional Dance Festival took place in the City of Stirling in March 2007. The number of dancers participating continues to be encouraging and we are particularly proud of the STDT Freestyle Choreography Competition which aims to encourage budding choreographers to produce a new piece of work based on the traditions. Increased awareness: The Trust has succeeded in increasing the profile of traditional dance and its status as part of the history and culture of the Scottish people. The benefits of the teaching and practice of dance, particularly among the youth, has been emphasised by the Trust and more importantly are now being recognised by the Scottish Executive and Local Govt. Physical education is now a priority in our schools, and it is the aim of our organisation to ensure that traditional dance has a prominent role in this increased activity. We believe that dance improves fitness, posture, mind-agility and social skills at any age. Appointment of Traditional Dance Artists: STDT would like to see a Traditional Dance Artist based in every Local Authority throughout Scotland with the aim of encouraging existing activity and introducing new initiatives to encourage the participation and enjoyment of traditional dance throughout their area, from nursery schools to care homes. To date, we have now appointed Traditional Dance Artists in Clackmannanshire, Fife and Aberdeen City. Establishment of an Archive: The Trust has accumulated a wealth of material from its various dance development projects and has begun the initial steps to establish a formal archive and resource centre for Scottish traditional dance. The archive includes oral history, artefacts, books, manuscripts, memorabilia, music scores, photographs and video clips. STDT was successful in obtaining funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to secure a full-time Archivist for one year. We are now ready to produce the final exhibition. Dance development projects: We have completed various successful dance development projects in the Borders, Angus, Perth & Kinross , Glasgow city, Renfrewshire and South Ayrshire. We will be embarking on a new project in South Lanarkshire schools from August 2007. Back to top |
